Am I un-American???

Postby Lefty on Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:44 pm

I hate to admit it, but the only blurb of the Winter Olympics I caught was a 30-second re-run of Shawn Miller's snowboard finale (of which I thought was pretty cool, even though I'm not fond of snowboarding). And it's not just the Winter Olympics, but the Summer Games as well. I might stop channel surfing long enough to catch one event, but that's about the extent of it.

A huge part of it is that I just don't watch a lot of tv anymore. But I must say shamefully admit that when it comes to the Olympics, what really is one of the greatest sporting arenas in history, I just can't force myself to stay interested.

The biggest problem with Olympic TV viewing is trying to find when an event is on. I got to watch a lot because I'm home this time of year. The summer games will see me watching 0% of the broadcast.

Now go out and practice ya' commie.

Like gwog said - it's tough to figure out what's showing when.

I mean, it's nice when the on-screen guide will say "mens short track 500m, mens short track 1000m, womens curling, mens hockey, mens snowcross, womens ski jump, partridge in a pear tree" - but this is the 'blurb' that covers 12 hours of broadcast time. I realise that you can get quick matches, overtimes, etc; but really, couldn't you break it down a bit more? Or is it set up this way for those that would "dvr the program" - and automatically get 12 hours of recording?

Either way, I caught some coverage mostly because my wife was home and, as a former upper-level figure skater, is a complete and total Olympic addict.

I love the Winter Olympics, even more than the Summer games. They offer a lot of obscure sports that fascinate me. Plus, they aren't as spoiled by corporate sponsorship, IMHO.

For me, a couple of events really stood out. Shaun White's half-pipe performance was mesmerizing. I know absolutely nothing about the sport but it is so clear he was just that much better than everyone else. Watching that kind of dominance was neat.

The other event was the men's 50km cross country race. This was on Sunday afternoon before the big hockey game. These athletes skied over 30 miles in just over 2 hours. What was most impressive was the sprint at the finish by the Norwegian to win it. If you can find it online, it's worth a view. To be able to exert that kind of energy after skiing for so long was mesmerizing to me.

Then of course there was the curling. It's a sport I fell in love with watching on CBC when I was in Michigan.

I, for one, have never really paid that much attention to the Winter Olympics, up to now. Having lived much of my life in more tropical climes, I've never really associated with it.

This year, though, hockey, alpine skiing and snowboarding have really caught my attention. Curling, well I started watching, but after a while, there's just so much sweeping one can take. Speedskating and figure skating (just the women's, of course), just a bit. None of the pairs stuff (ugh...). Bobsled, luge, missed the skeleton. Cross-country skiing looks interesting, but it's like watching the marathon - you watch the start, you watch the end.

Check nbcolympics.com or vancouver2010.com, they may still have video of many of the events.

One of the highlights for me. I can't tell for squat how difficult the tricks were, until they replayed them in slo-mo.

And, there's something to be said about making slackerwear your national team uniform ... especially the torn-jeans look
