Face-balanced vs toe-down putters

Postby MetsFan on Wed Mar 03, 2010 4:21 pm

An interesting treatise on why everyone should be using a face-balanced putter.

I have found more success with a face-balanced putter over a toe-down putter but I tend to keep the putter face square to the target line throughout the stroke.

Based on what I've read from Scotty Cameron, I'm sure he'd disagree with Frank Thomas. Not that either is the authoritative expert. But Cameron rarely makes a face-balanced putter.

Stan Utley in his book on putting went into detail about the two putters and the putting style each putter was better suited for. "Suited for" means what is natural and requires the least amount of compensation moves.

Straight back and Forward - Face Balanced
Putting on an arc - Toe Balanced

Interesting the number of pro's who mix or use a toe balance but attempt a Straight back and Forward stroke.

Simple is better, use the equipment as designed?

I used a Yes Face balanced for quite a few years. I have now gone back to a toe balanced.

I tend to concur with the hypothesis that the "Face Balanced" "Straight back - Straight Through" stroke requires considerably more practice to maintain.

The Arc stroke is for me a much more natural stroke. The other major change to my set up in the last couple of years has been to ensure that my shoulders are as level as possible at address. This has made a big difference to me.

No man boobs, although it is disturbing that you think of Prof that way.

No jealousy at all Sham. It's just that Goo has always proded himself as being an ass man. So surely you could imagine my surprise when he commented on the Prof's man boobs. 8)

Yes. Goo was referring to how well "equipped" you are. I, on the other hand, made a direct reference to your putting stroke in response to your mentioning of "shoulders".

So it's clear that Goo took this thread in a direction that the original poster, MetsFan, Couldn't have foreseen. :tequila:

Didn't some say or advocate that one of the most important equipment a golfer has is his body? :? Based on the recent posts, I think that person might wish to retract that statement even without a visual representation.
